The country of New Zealand is well known for its wine but sadly there is a lack of wine sommeliers in restaurants and pubs at the moment. If you consider yourself an expert on wine, then this could very well be the job for you. It is the job of a sommelier to taste wine and give their expert opinion on the history of different wine, what dishes certain wines go with and so on. If you work in a fine dining establishment as a sommelier, customers are going to ask questions about their wine and it’s your task to sell it to them. While it sounds like a pretty easy job, it’s important that you have the knowledge and then you can go far.
While your work might be centered around wine, you should also be passionate about it in your spare time, perhaps even have lots of wine gadgets at home. If you are interested in becoming a sommelier but don’t feel like you have the skills necessary yet, there are courses that can be taken at local colleges etc., where you can learn absolutely everything there is to know about wine. Injecting a little bit of personality and humour into your chat is important when being a sommelier, in addition to being professional about it. Sadly less restaurants are hiring sommeliers but regular waiters struggle to do the job correctly, particularly if they are asked questions that they don’t know the answer to.
A man named Cameron Douglas is an expert sommelier and he also regards himself an ambassador for wine in New Zealand. He wants there to be more sommeliers out there and he wants restaurants and other businesses to realise the importance of wine sommeliers and hire the right people for the job. This is what he is campaigning for and hopefully the rest of the country will follow suit.
